Ads, Bulldogs, Spartans combine for 12 grid All-state

Eight football players combined from Farragut and Bearden have been named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association high school All-state team.

Four Bulldog honorees who led BHS to its best season in school history with a 12-2 final record — Region 1-5A title, playoff victory against archrival Farragut and Class AAA state semifinal appearance — are Torey Works, Matt Williamson, C.J. Gunn and Dawson Halliday.

The Admirals, Region 2-5A champions who reached the Class AAA quarterfinals with a 11-2 final record, were led on the team by senior tailback Andre Sterling. Sterling (5-foot-10, 185-pounds) rushed for 2,784 yards and 29 touchdown in 2007, 5,989 yards with 72 TDs in his career.

Farragut senior linebacker Micah Devan (5-foot-10, 220) led his team in tackles, in addition to carrying FHS special teams as placekicker and punter — plus occasional fullback duties.

Zach Allen, a 5-foot-11, 189-pound senior, proved to be equally versatile as the Admirals’ leading receiver while a vital member of the FHS secondary.

Will Jackson, the only junior honoree from either school (6-foot-4, 275) is an offensive tackle who helped make life easier for Sterling & Company.

As Bearden’s leading tackler, Williamson (6-foot-2, 205 senior defensive end) led a Bulldog defense that shut down William Blount, limited Farragut to 14 points and held eventual state champ Smyrna and its powerful passing attack to 10 points in the state semifinals.

Works, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior, led the Bulldog offense with 1,900 yards rushing and 18 touchdown in 2007.

Gunn, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound senior, not only helped lead the Bulldog secondary, but also was an offensive target as a wide receiver.

Halliday, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior quarterback, was a three-year starter known not only as a solid quarterback from the pocket, but also for his ability to throw on the run and gain yardage with his feet.

SPARTANS ALL-STATE

Four members of Webb School of Knoxville’s Division II football team also earned All-state honors.

Senior Brandt Campbell, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior runningback who led the Spartans in rushing last season, joins teammates Andrew Daley (6-foot-4, 300-pound senior offensive lineman), Camp Arnett (6-foot-2, 220-pound junior defensive tackle) and Derek Boyce (5-foot-10, 190-pound senior defensive back/runningback).
