Sliding past the competition
Freshmen, defense, pitching all combine to lift FHS softball

Keri Meade’s diving catch in foul ground got the game started off right for the Farragut Lady Admirals, while pitching and timely hitting did the rest.

In its season opener at FHS’s Bellamy Field, Farragut blanked Karns 5-0 Monday, March 10, behind a complete-game five-hit shutout from FHS pitching staff ace Rachel Ingleby.

The senior recorded eight strikeouts without a walk or hit-batter.

“Rachel pitched solid tonight,” FHS head coach David Moore said. “I don’t know if she had as much command of her pitches as she would like.

“As usual, they got some runners in scoring position, and she pitched her best in those situations,” he added.

Meanwhile, Karns committed a pair of costly first-inning errors allowing the Lady Admirals to claim a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore first baseman Stephanie Harris belted a single for Farragut while scoring three runs — the first on a nifty backdoor slide in the first inning despite the throw home arriving well before Harris.

“She scored all the way from first, we had her going on the pitch,” Moore said. “'Steph' has good speed, and she’s a good baserunner.”

A pair of Lady Admirals playing in their first-ever high school varsity game provided 60 percent of the FHS hit production.

Freshman designated hitter Megan Harris punched out two hits, one providing an RBI. “She’s been hot in the scrimmages, we’ve got to get her bat in the line-up,” Moore said.

Farragut freshman shortstop Audi Murry belted a second-inning double and later scored on an Abby Rose Martin double down the third base line.

“She’s doing a good job at shortstop, and that gives us the luxury of keeping Keri [Meade] and Morgan [Holbrook] at third and second, where they played last year,” Moore said. “She had a big double tonight.”

Pinch-runner LaShae Wallace scored one run.
