SoccerDawgs rip South-Doyle, Alcoa to start season

The Bearden Bulldogs soccer team opened the season with two wins as its quest for a state title begins.

Bearden (2-0) picked up its first District 4-AAA victory of the season with an 11-0 win at South-Doyle Thursday, March 13.

“I thought our forwards did an outstanding job,” Bearden head coach Eric Turner said. “Our mixture of defense played extremely well. I thought we were going to get tougher games, but we just played at a very high level in both of those games, so that made for some nice nights.”

Tom Webster, Aaron Schoenfeld and Ryan Campbell had two goals each to lead a Bulldogs team that had 27 shots on goal.

“Tom Webster and Aaron Schoenfeld really had great games,” Turner said. “Seth Williams on defense [played well].”

Aaron Atkisson, Patrick Harmony, Billy Miller, Alex Wilkerson and Alex Widmer also added goals for Bearden.

Schoenfeld had four assists and Webster had three. Campbell, Widmer and Williams also contributed assists.

With a lot of new starters in the midfield and defense, Turner is happy with how they have meshed with the returning forwards thus far, even though he said there is room for improvement.

“The defense has done a good job, so I am pretty happy with the defense; the midfield scenario we need to get a lot better at,” Turner said. “That’s kind of what we are looking at to improve on during our [Bearden] Invitational next weekend.

“That will really be a test for us to see what we really need to work on and what really needs to improve for us.”

The Bulldogs will host the Bearden Invitational March 27-30. Bearden will play Gallatin, Christian Brothers, Hendersonville and Knoxville Catholic.

“Team defense is definitely the main thing we need to work on and we will be tested with that in the invitational,” Turner said. “That is kind of the game clock we are using to look and see where we stand and what we need to do to get better.”

After losing All-state goalkeeper Bryan Walker to graduation last year, the Bulldogs are looking to find his replacement.

Freshman Jamie White played against South-Doyle and junior Miles Goodman got the start at Alcoa, which Bearden won 8-0 Tuesday, March 11. (No additional details available at press deadline)

“It is still kind of up in the air,” Turner said about who the goalkeeper will be for the rest of the year.
