Lady ’Dawgs bounce back, slip past Fulton

Gary Mashburn couldn’t say enough good things about his Bearden softball defense after its 4-3 victory at Fulton Friday, March 28.

“Good defense by the whole team,” the Bearden head coach said.

“If the ball was hit in the gap, our outfielders got to it quickly and got it the cutoff man, prevented runners from advancing. Infielders made plays, groundballs, bunts, you name it. Coverages were all good with Fulton trying to advance runners.”

A tiebreaking run in the top of the seventh was the difference as BHS improved to 4-4 overall and remained 2-1 in District 4-AAA entering the week.

On the mound, sophomore starter Kaylee Heemsoth got the win while reliever Laura Hensley, a freshman, picked up a save. They combined to allow six hits.

“Our pitchers pitched very well,” Mashburn said.
