Catholic pulls upset versus SoccerDawgs
Bearden bounces two powers at BHS Invitational

After beating two of the top teams in the state during the Bearden Invitational, the FHS Bulldogs’ week ends on a sour note at the hands of Knoxville Catholic 1-0, Monday, March 31, at Bearden’s Bruce Allender Field.

The game went nearly the distance without a goal before Catholic’s Ricardo Martinez took a cross and knocked it past Bearden’s diving goaltender Miles Goodman with 13:17 remaining.

“We didn’t deserve to win,” Bearden head coach Eric Turner said. “We didn’t even deserve to tie it. We just didn’t have the intensity, we didn’t have anything.

“It’s a good win for Catholic.” The Irish improved to 5-1.

Bearden, suffering its first loss and dropping to 5-1, did have it’s opportunities throughout the game, but couldn’t capitalize.

“Catholic played ten times better than we did,” Turner said. “The few opportunities we created, we just didn’t finish. Our guys thought they were just going to win the game by showing up and Catholic definitely had different plans.

“We just don’t like losing, but it is the way we lost,” Turner added. “Catholic came out and stuck it to us. They won all the 50-50 balls, they had intensity and wanted to win. Our guys just wanted to show up and think they were going to roll over and win the game.”

The SoccerDawgs did beat two perennial state power programs.

“The rest of the tournament we played awesome,” Turner said. “We beat Christian Brothers, we beat Hendersonville and we came out today and we thought we were way better than we were, so we just took a great weekend and threw it out the window today.”

Individually, “Aaron Schoenfeld and Tom Webster had a great weekend for us,” Turner said about his senior All-state forwards. “It ended on a sour note today, but they had a great weekend.”

Bearden opened the tournament with a 7-0 win versus Gallatin, Thursday, March 27. Webster scored two goals, including a penalty kick, to lead the way.

Ryan Campbell, Schoenfeld, Alex Wilkerson, Kevin Davis and Nick Sisco also scored goals. Webster and Campbell had two assists apiece, while Patrick Harmony and Tyler Koulavong each had one.

The Bulldogs recorded a 3-2 win against Division II power Christian Brothers Friday, March 28.

Schoenfeld scored a goal in the 12th minute and assisted on an Wilkerson goal in the 23rd minute to put Bearden up 2-0.

Christian Brothers got a goal on a corner to close the deficit 2-1 before halftime. Another CBHS goal 15 minutes into the half tied it 2-2. Webster broke the tie with a goal at just under 10 minutes left.

Bearden beat perennial Class AAA power Hendersonville 6-2, Saturday, March 29, paced by two Schoenfeld goals within the first 10 minutes of the game.
