Driver U.S. golf coach of year; Culbreth wins 4 state honors

Two Farragut High School head coaches have recently earned high honors from national and multiple state sources.

National Federation of State High Schools has named Mike Driver, FHS golf head coach, its National Coach of the Year in girls’ golf for 2007.

Meanwhile, Admirals boys soccer head coach Wallie Culbreth has collected four state Coach of the Year awards for 2007 after leading FHS to the Class AAA state title last spring.

Culbreth, beginning his seventh season at FHS this spring, has led the Ads to three state titles (also 2003, 2004) and one national crown (2004).

As for Driver, “This is a great accomplishment for coach Driver, the girls in the golf program, Farragut High School and the state of Tennessee,” Michael Reynolds, FHS principal, said.

Dwayne Simmons, Farragut athletic director, added: “He’s an excellent golfer in itself, so he definitely knows golf. The girls seem to really love him. They play for him, and he’s done an excellent job.” In eight seasons as head coach, Driver has led the FHS girls to Class AAA state titles in 2006 and 2004, and runner-up finishes in 2002, 2005 and 2007.

Culbreth earned Coach of the Year honors from TSSAA, National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association, National Federation of High Schools and Tennessee SportsWriters Association.

“He loves the kids,” Simmons said of Culbreth. “He puts a lot of time and energy into his soccer program, that’s why it’s so successful. I couldn’t ask for a better person who just loves his job.”
