Late-inning push leads Heritage past Bearden

After having two of its three games of the week rained out, the Bearden Lady Bulldogs softball team lost its only game of the week at Heritage 5-0, Wednesday, April 2.

“It was a nip and tuck ballgame,” Bearden head coach Gary Mashburn said. “It was a very winnable ballgame, but we just made more mistakes than they did. We hit the ball well, but we hit it at people and they made plays.”

Bearden and Heritage were scoreless heading into the fifth inning before the Lady Mountaineers got the bats working and scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

The Lady Bulldogs didn’t have the offensive production to respond.

Bearden sophomore Kaylee Heemsoth took a one-hitter into the fifth inning. “Kaylee Heemsoth did a good job pitching the ballgame,” Mashburn said.

The Lady Bulldogs overall record stands at 4-5, while their District 4-AAA record drops to 2-2 entering this week.

Bearden’s originally scheduled game versus South-Doyle Tuesday, April 1, at SDHS was rained out and reset for Monday, April 21, at BHS as part of a doubleheader. Both games will be five innings.

The Sevier County game, originally set for Thursday, April 3, at Sevier County, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 16.
