Three wins for BHS softball

Any time a team is made up of nine sophomores it is fair to expect ups and downs, but Bearden Lady Bulldogs softball head coach Gary Mashburn feels his young team is on its way up.

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to the 2008 Plateau Invitation Softball Tournament at Crossville Centennial Park Friday and Saturday April 11-12 and came out with two wins. All games were rained out Friday, so Bearden had to play four on Saturday.

The BHS softballers beat Cookeville 6-2 before losing to DeKalb County 8-2 despite being ahead 2-0 heading into the fifth thanks to a Meagan Fredenberg home run.

Bearden beat Cordova 2-0 as sophomore Kaylee Heemsoth threw a no-hitter.

“Pitching is getting a little better,” Mashburn said. “Obviously when you throw a no-hitter the pitching is getting better. I am pretty pleased with that.”

Bearden (7-9 overall and 3-4 in District 4-AAA entering the week) closed out the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Sweetwater in an elimination game.

“Offensively we played very well in the Sweetwater game,” Mashburn said. “We just hit some balls right at them. We had three or four opportunities to score some runs in the game, but just couldn’t get the big hit.

“Overall I told the kids they played very solid softball and I am very impressed,” he added. “We took a very young squad down there and they played quite well.”

BHS 12 LENOIR CITY 2

The Lady Bulldogs picked up its first win of the week with a 12-2 versus Lenoir City, Thursday, April 10, at home. Heemsoth picked up the win on the mound as she only allowed three Lenoir City hits.

Alex Boris tripled and doubled while Fredenberg hit two doubles to lead Bearden’s offensive attack.

MARYVILLE 10 BHS 0

Bearden managed only two hits as it lost to Maryville 10-0, Tuesday, April 8, at MHS. Elizabeth Gray provided the lone spark of offense with a triple.

WILLIAM BLOUNT 12 BHS 2

The Lady Bulldogs made eight errors as WBHS crushed Bearden 12-2, Monday, April 7, at home.
