Farragut tennis dominates Bearden

Farragut’s tennis boys served up some rare but overwhelming success against its archrivals.

Blistering perennial power Bearden 8-1 at West Hills courts Wednesday, April 9, Farragut improves to 7-1 overall while positioning itself for the District 4-AAA championshp match showdown by improving to 5-0.

Meanwhile, the FHS girls also improved to 5-0 in district, 6-2 overall, after a 6-3 win against the Lady Bulldogs. (More on this match later in the story).

About the Farragut boys’ groundbreaking win, FHS head coach Josh Nelson said, “We’re thrilled, I don’t know how long it’s been since we’ve actually beaten Bearden on the boys side. Really, we just saw it more as the stepping stone to winning the district and region.”

Losing only one senior from 2007, “We had the expectations going into this year of doing something,” Nelson said. “We’ve had a lot of players step up.”

All six Farragut singles players won: Alex Houck, Tron Dareing David Jester, Russell Graves, Andrew Klarner and Adam Wozek.

“Russell Graves, he plays sport four, and he’s really stepped up his game,” Nelson said.

Bearden’s double team of Matt Webb-Noah Cruz kept the Bulldogs from being shut out.

“On both the boys and girls side, we’re playing out best tennis right now,” Nelson said.

FHS GIRLS WHIP BEARDEN

Farragut’s girls, two-time defending 4-AAA champs, won four of six singles matches and two of three in doubles. Lady Ad singles winners were Leslie Roberge, Megan Whaley, Jamie Long and Sarah Hill.

In a battle of No. 1, Bearden’s Kayla McMurray beat FHS No. 1 Julia Hsu 8-0, while Lady Bulldog Kim Hodges also won.

In doubles, Hsu-Whaley and and Roberge-Lucy Edick won for Farragut, while BHS’s Liza Rineiri-Sarah Axon tandem won.
