New management at Shane’s

Shane’s Rib Shack in Turkey Creek celebrated its one year anniversary around three months ago.

“It was almost 15 months ago when it opened. The exact date I don’t know,” said newly hired general manager, Mike Barrett.

“Our first year has been alright. I just took over this store about two weeks ago, so I couldn’t give you any details on how it’s been. It’s growing every day,” Barrett added.

Shane’s Rib Shack now

has more than 130 stores

“I’ve had a lot of restaurant experience and I’ve been looking around to get back into it … and I ate here once and was just blown away by the quality of the food. I saw they were hiring and the rest is history,” he said.

Shane’s recently applied for a beer permit in Knox County. Barrett said Shane’s would be offering beer soon: “You got to have ribs and beer.”

The Knoxville location has no anniversary plans, but Barrett said to expect changes and special treats for the rest of the year.

“They’re putting off plans until football season. They just talked to W-I-V-K about doing a remote and stuff of that nature,” Barrett said.

Barrett does not see competition with neighboring Calhoun’s as a deterrent to business. Although both restaurants are known for ribs, they have different atmospheres.

“We’re more family casual, come in and have a good time, laugh, listen to the bluegrass. It’s more like a formal gathering at Calhoun’s,” Barrett said.

“It seems like we have a very loyal following. We have a lot of families that come here in the evenings; in the days it’s mostly the business people around here.

“Being new to the area, people are still kind of finding us for the first time. Once they do, they bring their families.”
