Fennell, Walker step up, BHS rallies past Science Hill

Pitchers have to have a short memory and nobody made a better example of that than Bearden senior Andy Fennell.

After Fennell suffered his first loss earlier in the week to Farragut, the righty shut down Science Hill as the Bulldogs won 2-1 in eight innings, Saturday, April 26, at Bearden’s Phil Garner Field.

“Andy pitched great,” BHS head coach Matt Buckner said. “He was good eight innings strong. That was the best outing he has had in a while and we needed that from him.” Fennell struck out nine while scattering only three hits to earn the complete game victory.

“After getting lit up Monday in the Farragut game I just came in here with focus,” Fennell said. “I battled through the first few innings and I felt like I threw pretty well today.”

The first hit for BHS (30-3 overall, 12-2 in District 4-AAA entering the week) came in the bottom of the fourth when Matthew Scruggs singled. “We had some offensive struggles,” Buckner said.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the final inning, Bryant Walker led off the seventh with a double. He scored on Hunter Daniel’s bunt single that made it through the right side of the infield untouched.

Ryan Ford drew a walk to lead-off the eighth. Ford stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw with no outs.

After Science Hill got two outs, the stage was set for Walker. The senior again stepped up to the task in the clutch by driving in the winning run with a single.

“Bryant Walker had two huge hits ... he is a senior leader and did a great job,” Buckner said. Walker also had two home runs in an 11-2 win versus Heritage April 23.

Bearden also beat South-Doyle (13-2) last week but lost to Karns 4-1 in the annual Turn Back the Clock Night game at FHS April 24.

BHS 13 SOUTH DOYLE 2

The Bulldogs beat South Doyle 13-2 on the road Friday, April 25. Senior Taylor Gouffon got the win on the mound.

KARNS 4 BHS 1

Ford scored Bearden’s only run on a fifth inning single by Gouffon.

BHS 11 HERITAGE 2

Scruggs smashed a home run the Bulldogs crushed Heritage Wednesday, April 23, at home. Daniel scattered four hits to earn the win on the mound.
