Another FHS-SoccerDawgs showdown?
District tourney final Friday expected to be at FHS; No. 6 Bearden closes regular season strong

Bearden Bulldogs senior Tom Webster wanted to make the most out of his senior night. The Tennessee High School All-American scored two goals in his final regular season game to lead the state’s No. 6 Bulldogs on BHS Senior Night 3-1 against visiting McMinn County, Thursday, May 1, at Bearden’s Bruce Allender Field.

“Last weekend we went to Memphis and that was a pretty big weekend for us,” said Webster, who helped the team go 1-1-1 against top notch competition in the tournament. “We stepped it up and we feel like we are coming back and playing as a team.”

With all the success of BHS soccer, Webster said he and the other seniors have a responsibility when they step onto the field. “It has just gone by so fast and it is something you have to live up to when you see all the signs on the fence,” he said.

McMinn took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the first half, but Bearden (11-4-2 entering the week) tied the game on a Webster goal at the 22:10 mark.

Ryan Campbell scored with 27:33 left in the game and Webster put Bearden up by two goals with 19:23 left. “We defended well, attacked well and shut them out in the second half,” BHS head coach Eric Turner said.

Bearden welcomes back senior Billy York, out with a broken foot. “For three of the four years he has probably been the most improved player,” Turner said.

The Bulldogs lost senior Alex Widmer for the season with a knee injury earlier in the season. “It is kind of sad for him, but he scored some big goals for us last year to help us get to the state tournament,” Turner said.

Bearden beat Dobyns-Bennett 7-1 April 30, at BHS, led by Aaron Schoenfeld, Alex Wilkerson and Campbell with two goals apiece and DJ Pleasant one goal. Assists included Carter Wykoff.
