It’s 13 westside champs at Metro


Ten individual west side track and field athletes and three relays team took titles at the Metro meet among a 15-team field Friday, May 2, at William Blount High School.

Farragut’s Alex Newby was 3200-meter run champ (11:44.71), while Bearden’s Sarah Canter was No. 1 in discus (125-feet-10).

Admiral Jacob Gibson finished first in the 800 (1:57.90), while BHS freshman Devrin Young raced his way to the 200 title (22.49) while helping Bearden claim third.

Private school success was plentiful, as Webb’s Glory Johnson was 100 champ (12.38), helping lead the Lady Spartans to a third-place finish. Other Webb champs: Amber Zimmerman in the 1600 (5:26.42), Ashtain Rothchild in high jump (4-feet-10) and two relay teams: 4 X 100 (50.23) and 4 X 200 (1:45.13).

Christian Academy of Knoxville’s powerful 4 X 800 girls team won yet again (10:06.18), as did one of its legs, Mary Thompson, in the 800 (2:23.53).

Justin Emerson of CAK captured the boys’ 100 (11.00).

Renee Maggert of Knoxville Catholic finished first in girls’ pole vault (8-feet-06).
