Spirit of Praise performs at Carnegie Hall

The Christian Academy of Knoxville Spirit of Praise Ensemble recently returned from New York where the group performed at Carnegie Hall Saturday, April 26.

This is the sixth year the CAK ensemble, under the direction of Peggy Filyaw, has been invited to perform as part of the Christian Schools Chorale at Carnegie Hall.

This was the groups’ fifth concert at Carnegie Hall — The other New York performance was in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center.

Of the 11 Christian schools participating, CAK was one of two schools representing Tennessee in the 2008 Christian Schools Chorale at Carnegie Hall.

The choir was composed of 300 singers including the 13 members of CAK’s Spirit of Praise Ensemble: sopranos Kayla Allsop, Paige Berry, Kelsey Broyles, Amy Jones, Hannah Oster; altos Eleanor Angel, Rebekah Angel, Jordan Duncan, Jenny Hamrick; tenors Keenan Kolinsky, Tim Stanfield; and basses Jordan Cross and Andrew Frazer. The students participated in two hours of rehearsal following their arrival on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and again Saturday afternoon prior to the groups’ Saturday evening performance.

When not rehearsing, they were able to take in some New York sites and events including multiple theatre performances on Broadway, shopping in Times Square and Chinatown, a walking tour of Ground Zero, Wall Street and Battery Park to view the Statue of Liberty, exploring Greenwich Village, So-Ho and Little Italy. They enjoyed dining in some of New York’s famous restaurants including the Carnegie Deli after the

performance.
