The last Farragut High School sporting event played in front of the 30-year-old concrete stands at Farragut Stadium/Bill Clabo Field ended in heartbreak for the home team.
West sank the Admirals in its attempt to repeat as Class AAA boys soccer state champions. It happened with a sudden-death overtime goal for a 3-2 victory in the Region 2-AAA semifinals Tuesday, May 13.
The state’s No. 4-ranked Class AAA Rebels got a Tanner Thompson goal from about 15 yards out with 3:10 left in the five-minute sudden-death OT. The KWHS sophomore got open down the right side and beat a charging FHS goalie.
Farragut, ranked No. 2 statewide, ends its season with a 19-2-2 record. West will face Oak Ridge in the Region 2-AAA title game Thursday May 15.
“We gave all we had, it’s just the odds went against us tonight,” FHS head coach Wallie Culbreth said. “That’s all I want to talk about.”
Thompson put the Rebs up 2-1 with 3:15 left in the first of two 10-minute, non-sudden-death overtimes — but the Admirals answered quickly.
Travis Bolton took a misfired header and kicked in the tying goal from about seven yards out, coming at the 1:45 mark of overtime number one.
Cody McCoy put West ahead 1-0 with 17:15 left in the first half of regulation with a 30-yard bomb into upper right corner of the net.
Farragut’s Josh Holt answered with a tying goal at the 33:41 mark of the second half.
