Town goes hybrid for rec department

Town of Farragut has purchased and received its first hybrid vehicle, a 2008 2-wheel drive Ford Escape.

Purchase was approved at the April 24 Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. The vehicle was delivered days later.

The vehicle was purchased from Ted Russell Ford for $28,400. The vehicle has leather seats and a six-CD and mp3 player.

According to Bud McKelvey, public works director, this was the only bid for hybrid vehicles the Town received. The vehicle was purchased for a higher bid than the original ($25,241) because it was in stock.

“We ordered two hybrid vehicles last fall. ... The two we ordered last fall don’t even have a build date yet,” McKelvey said at the April Board meeting. “This bid was actually put out early because this vehicle isn’t needed until this fall coming up. But we got an alternate bid for a vehicle that is available and in stock.

“We decided the best route to go here is to go with the alternate bid, the in-stock vehicle in order to get it here because we have no idea when the others will be here,” he added.

“It’s going to become a vehicle for the recreation department. They’re going to need two vehicles at night on certain nights ...”
