Lay’s meats return to Food City

Food City announced the return of Lay’s meats to its stores. Lay’s was originally produced in a plant off East Jackson Avenue and was the official meat brand of the 1982 World’s Fair.

“Like our company, Lay’s was also a local family-owned operation and we’re thrilled to bring back such a popular line of top-quality products,” said Food City president and chief executive officer Steven C. Smith.

John Ward, later known as the “Voice of the Vols,” wrote the original Lay’s jingle: “The Merry Song of the Three Little Pigs.”

Food City will be resurrecting a line of Lay’s slice luncheon meats, bacon, ham, chili, sloppy joes, Three Pig Wieners, Touchdown Beef Franks, Quikstart Wieners, Ole Timer Sausage and Lay’s bologna.

Family Brands International in Lenoir City will manufacture these products.

“We’re very excited to see the return of this wonderful regional favorite,” said John Edd Wampler, Family Brands International president.
