FHS Rugby second in SMAC league
Staff Reports - Thu, Jun, 26, 2008
It wasn’t the finish head coach Josh Holt wanted, but his Farragut High School Rugby team enjoyed some big victories — and one big trip — during the 2008 season.
“The high points of our season were beating Maryville and beating West, two teams that since I’ve been coaching there we’ve never beaten,” Holt said. That’s despite losing to Karns in the Smoky Mountain Athletic Club “Cup Level,” or top tier championship match in early May, then falling to Father Ryan in the state tourney in Murfreesboro a week later.
Holt singled out four players for special efforts: 2008 graduates Matt Neuhart, a conference All-star at No. 8 position; Chris Davidson, a flanker who would have been an All-star “easily” except for injury; Daniel Chelette, scrumhalf, a four-year starter, and rising senior Matt Coffey, center.
Farragut’s varsity record ended at 5-3, not including three games against British foes during a trip to England at Spring Break.
