• Tryouts for Bearden High School Baseball’s 2009 team runs from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, July 21-22, at BHS’s Phil Garner Field. For more info contact Bearden head coach Matt Buckner at 865-368-3141 or assistant coach Jack Tate at 865-924-8001.

• Cody Brown, University of Tennessee rising senior third baseman and former Farragut High School All-state honoree, rose to the top of the batting statistics for the Woodstock River Bandits of the Valley Baseball League in June. Brown ended the month leading the team in batting average (.398), runs scored (18), hits (33), doubles (seven), slugging percentage (.506) and on-base percentage (.447). Brown has 33 hits, 10 RBI through 22 games.

• East Tennessee Trails/Tenn-essee Trails Association announces a Saturday, July 19 hike around Elkmont in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Meet at the Townsend Y at 9 a.m. Lots of creeks in the GSMNP, and group will cross as many creeks as can be found on the trails around Elkmont. • Mercy Health Partners Foundation 22nd annual Baptist Golf Classic is Monday, July 21, at Fox Den Country Club. Tournament is four-man swat with morning and afternoon rounds at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The event features various prizes including generous goody bags, golf shirts and contests on several holes. • Harvey Broome Group’s next outing is July 26: canoe float, Clinch River, Norris Dam to Highway 61. Put in below Norris Dam, take out at Highway 61, near Clinton. Distance is 11 miles. This is a relaxing float, with good current but no whitewater. Some waterfowl may be observed. Bring a sack lunch and even a cooler. Only very basic canoe skills are necessary for this trip. • All funds raised through the inaugural THE MAN RUN for Prostate Cancer Awareness will support free prostate cancer screenings and educational programs of The University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute. An event for adults and kids, THE MAN RUN is a 5K run/1-mile fun run/walk, with 5K run set for 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, at Tyson Park in Knoxville. Fun run/walk starts at 8:30 a.m. Online registration is available at www.active.com. Individual and team entries are available. Additional donations are tax deductible. • Farragut Softball League’s 2008 fall season begins the second week of August; registration ends Thursday, July 31. Each league division includes seven regular season league games and a final tournament and award a tournament champion in each division. • Sam Watson, rising senior post at Farragut, and Nathan Parker, rising senior wing at Bearden, were key players for Midstate Ballerz, an AAU team that includes several East Tennessee high school players that won the 17U AAU State Basketball Championship normally dominated by Memphis teams. They recently beat the top-ranked Memphis, who reportedly has some of the nation’s top 100 players.

• CBFO Volleyball Fall Registration is now open to all girls 3rd-grade through rising high school senior. Cost is $80 per player. Registration forms and schedules can be found at Pak Mail, 11803 Kingston Pike in Farragut. Deadline for registration is noon, Aug. 15. • Farragut High School Volleyball tryouts will be 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday and Friday, July 17-18, at FHS.   

• Farragut High School Softball tryouts will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m., July 24, at FHS’s Bellamy Field.

• July Golf Camps at Concord Park Par 3 Course Camp for ages 6 to 8 is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days, Monday, July 14, and Tuesday, July 15. Cost is $75. To register, call course at 865-966-9103.

• East Side Story, part of the 2008 Knoxville By Cycle Summer Ride Series, is a repeat of the 2007 Neighborhood Bike Ride route. These bicycle rides are for all ages and skill levels. This ride will meet at Ashley Nicole Dream Playground (Caswell Park), 620 Winona St. Saturday, July 12. The 11-mile ride highlights the Parkridge, Holston Hills and Burlington neighborhoods, Chilhowee Park, Speedway Circle, and Knoxville Botanical Gardens. All participants should be on site and ready to ride by 9 a.m. More information is available at www.knoxtrans.org.

• Tennessee Valley Fair once again will host the annual Cheerleading Competition beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Homer Hamilton Theatre at Chilhowee Park in Knoxville. Competition is open to all official squads from elementary, junior and senior high schools. Entry deadline is Aug. 18 and limited to first 35 entries received.
