Newport is Rodeo state champion


A Westside rodeo standout has earned top honors in the Peach State. Haley Newport, a rising junior at Bearden High School, has been named Georgia High School Rodeo Queen for 2008-09 along with Wrangler Barrel Racing champ at the Georgia Rodeo Finals in Perry, Ga., May 30-June 1.

Traveling to what is billed as “The World’s Largest Rodeo” in Farmington, N.M., Newport will compete in barrel racing ass part of the Georgia High School Rodeo team. The 60th Annual National High School Finals Rodeo Sunday-Saturday, July 20-26, will feature more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states plus Canada and Australia. In addition to competing for more than $200,000 is prizes, national contestants such as Newport will be vying for more than $325,000 in college scholarships.
