Rodgers champ at AJGA tilt

Brandon Rodgers is on a roll heading into a big golf tournament locally this week.

Rodgers, rising junior at Farragut High School, won the 54-hole Stanford Financial Junior Championship, an American Junior Golf Association tour event, July 28-30, in Memphis.

Rodgers closed with a 3-under 68 round Thursday, July 30, to end 209, eight shots better than his nearest competitor.

Grant Milner of Webb School tied for fourth (218), while FHS rising sophomore Hayden Anderson tied for 19th (226).

On the womenís side, Alyssa Randolph, FHS 2008 graduate and former Lady Admiral standout, finished fourth (230).

Rodgers and Milner are joining other westsiders as the AJGA is close to home this week, Loudon, for the inaugural AJGA Knoxville Junior Open, Aug. 5-7, at Tennessee National.

Davis Bunn of FHS, Mike Markiewicz of Knoxville Catholic and Leigh Henderson of Webb also will compete among the nationís best junior golfers ages 12-18 in a 54-hole stroke play competition.

Markiewiczís best 2008 tour finish was tying for first at the Medicus Preseason at Texarkana, Texas, earlier this season.

Hendersonís highest finish came in 2007 at the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior where she finished fifth.

First and second rounds were Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 5-6, followed by the final round Thursday, Aug. 7. Tee times today, Thursday, run off the No. 1 tee from 8 a.m. to 12:48 p.m.

Awards ceremony will be held at the tournament scoreboard following final round. Spectators are welcome (free admission).
