Prevent Suicide Walk set

The local chapter of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is hosting its 11th Annual “Out of Darkness Walk to End Suicide” this Saturday, Oct. 5, at The Cove at Concord Park off Northshore Drive.

While the event is a fundraiser for AFSP, it also is an opportunity to raise awareness “of the public crisis of suicide and support survivors of suicidal loss,” explained P.J. Alexander, mental health counselor and chairman of the event.

Establishing the local walk evolved out of the Knoxville Suicide Griever’s Support Group, which Alexander founded in 1996.

“Survivors need to do something in response to suicide as part of the healing process,” she said, adding the support group ideas of perhaps participating in a community walk led her to investigate and affiliate with AFSP.

Check-in and registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Opening ceremony and walk begins at 10:30 a.m. and concludes at noon.

For more information, contact Alexander at 865-640-2459 or via e-mail at pj4031@tds.net.

All proceeds will go to AFSP. Donations will be accepted through December.
