• West Valley Middle School baseball tryouts are Aug. 26-27 at Bearden High School. Sixth- and seventh-graders must be on site by 4:30 p.m., with tryouts starting at 5. • The FHS girls’ basketball team is having a yard sale and carwash from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23, at Farragut High School.

• Three Christian Academy of Knoxville football players won individual competitions versus some of Knox County’s other top high school talent during halftime ceremonies at the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic 2008 Kick-Off Classic at Bearden High School Friday, Aug. 15. Winners were Matthew Warren (kickoff of 65 yards), Keenan Kolinski (punt of 60 yards) and Marcus Walker (40-yard dash).

• Lauren Hancock, former Concord Hills community swim team coach since 2006 and record-holding swimmer during her years at Duke University in the early 2000s, qualified to compete in the Olympic Trials for a place on the U.S. Swim Team earlier this summer Hancock, who trained with Gardner Howland at Pilot Aquatic Club for her Olympic bid, competed with roughly 100 swimmers from across the country in the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley. Hancock is a 2004 Duke graduate with a degree in bachelor’s degree in sociology.

• Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce 2008 Farragut Fall 5K Run, Fun Walk & Pet Parade begins at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 27, on Watt Road adjacent to Mayor Bob Leonard Park. Pre-registration cost is $15, and can be paid by charging (call 865-675-7057) or make check payable to: Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce and mail to: Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce/P.O. Box 22461/Farragut, TN, 37933. Pre-registration ends Friday, Sept. 19. Day-of-race registration is from 7 to 7:30 a.m., Sept. 27. Cost is $20. Starting on Watt Road, race goes through Sedgefield subdivision and back to the park. Plaques and/or medallions awarded to top three finishers in various gender/age categories. Cash award goes to first overall male and first overall female. Knoxville Track Club will manage event. Proceeds to support Chamber and its education grants, plus Young-Williams Animal Center. • Loudon County Habitat for Humanity will host a golf tournament Friday, Sept. 5, at Toqua Golf Course in Tellico Village. Event will be a four-player scramble with handicap, and is open to mixed- or single- gender teams. The $300 team entry fee includes morning refreshments, lunch and prizes. Proceeds from the tournament will help Habitat for Humanity build homes in Loudon County. • Hardin Valley Academy Athletic Council currently is running a Discount Card sale. All HVA athletic teams are selling the card, raising money for their particular sport. The card offers discounts at various local eateries throughout the fiscal year. A “Blitz Night” is planned for Monday, Aug. 18, to sell any remaining cards that a team has not sold by their deadline of Aug. 14. All of the cards had been distributed to all student athletes of the fall and winter season sports and several spring sports. Another fund-raiser HVAAC currently is running is the sale of media guide ads. The Council decided to produce a media guide for each of the three sport seasons – fall, winter, and spring. • The inaugural THE MAN RUN for Prostate Cancer Awareness is an event for adults and kids, featuring a 5K run/1-mile fun run/walk. The 5K run is set for 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, at Tyson Park.
