FHS boys golf whips 7-state field in Kingsport

Rounding into shape with all eyes on a Class AAA state championship bid, Farragut High School’s boys golf team did nothing to discourage that goal Sunday and Monday, Sept. 7-8, at Ridgefields Country Club in Kingsport.

Led by University of Tennessee commitment Brandon Rodgers’ 36-hole 139, 5-under-par to finish second individually, the Admirals whipped a stellar 16-team, seven- state field to capture the 2008 McDonald’s Tournament of Champions. Farragut won by three strokes against Chattanooga Baylor while outlasting many top teams from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wyoming, Utah and Virginia.

Stellar play from junior Davis Bunn with a 142, 2-under-par, earned him sixth-place, while senior Patrick Thomas at 145, 1-over-par, tied for 13th.

“These are the better teams from everywhere,” FHS head coach Scott McKenzie said. “To play that caliber of people and to come out with a win, it is something special.”

The Admirals overcame a two-stroke deficit to Marshall County, Ky., after one round.

Junior Hayden Anderson and senior Elliott Wickenden each finished 153, 9-over.

Other Tennessee teams included host Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett, Johnson City Science Hill and Tennessee High, Bristol.

Overall in 2008, “The season’s been going good,” McKenzie said. “We’re just taking it one at a time.”
