VolleyDogs win 5 in tourney

Despite its youth, Bearden volleyball enjoyed a six-match winning streak last week — the final five during its annual VolleyDog Challenge at BHS Saturday, Sept. 13.

Entering the week with a 14-5 overall record, 1-1 in District 4-AAA, the VolleyDogs claimed tourney match victories against McMinn Central, Heritage, CAK, Halls and Clinton — winning its pool — before losing to Seymour in the semifinals. “We were just pretty much worn out,” BHS head coach Jennifer Allen said. “Tara [Robertson] was sick, had a fever.”

As for top individual efforts, “Tara Robertson’s playing really well, she’s our sophomore middle,” Allen said. “Sloane Gouffon [outside hitter] played pretty well on Saturday. Amy Letendre [outside hitter] played pretty well on Saturday. Riley [Armstrong] played decent. All the girls that are playing are really pulling together.”

Beginning District 4-AAA play in Lenoir City against Farragut and William Blount Thursday, Sept. 11, Bearden rebounded from a loss to archrival FHS to beat the Lady Govs 2-games-to-1.

About the team’s youth, “We’re playing with a freshman setting, and we’ve got two [middle hitters] that have never played varsity before,” Allen said. “Our passing’s not really good right now and, of course, we got girls who have never set before. But we’re just trying to pull it all together.”
