Turtlehead’s marks two years

Turtlehead’s Tea and Coffee Company is celebrating its second year in Farragut.

Jan and Tamara Miller will be offering tea samples and snacks, Saturday, Nov. 1, for the anniversary.

“We’ll have specials throughout the store, tea tastings and snacks,” Tamara said.

The shop holds tea and coffee tastings regularly.

Also for the month of December, the shop will have “Design Your Own Gift Basket Days” on Wednesdays, with 10 percent off the total purchase.

Tea tastings, like those offered for the anniversary, are regularly offered at Turtlehead’s.

“[It’s] just a new avenue to share our knowledge and have our customers experience new teas and coffees,” Jan said of the pair’s decision to begin tasting classes.

Current classes include Basic Coffee 101, Basics of Tea Tasting, Unique Tea Types 101, Exploration of Breakfast Style Teas, a Regional Tea Tour of China, Green Tea Tasting and Oolong Tea Tasting.

Classes change regularly, and schedules and prices are available online at www.turtleheadsteaandcoffee.com.

In the past year, the Millers also have branched out and begun selling more coffees.

“Our loyal coffee customers are delighted with the new and different roasts and flavors,” Jan said.

Turtlehead’s only sells flavored coffees during the holiday season: from October to January. These coffees are from local Vienna Coffee Company.

Turtlehead’s other coffees are all fair trade and organic. Many are shade grown and Smithsonian bird-friendly.

“They’re all fresh-roasted. We get them in once a week,” Tamara said.

“We’ve been able to get things in from India and very rare coffee from Ethiopia … that you wouldn’t normally be able to get,” she added of Turtlehead’s support of fair trade co-ops.

“We are actually having a lot of fun and we are having a lot of fun playing with these different beans and roasts.

“People in Farragut support that. They almost always come in and think it’s fun and exciting and try the new ones,” Tamara said.

Customers should be aware of changing hours from Monday, Nov. 3 to Jan. 31, 2009. The shop will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday and will be closed for major holidays.

“We’d like to thank the people of Farragut for all their support over the last two years,” Tamara said.

“And we’d like to encourage anyone who hasn’t been by to stop on by for something new to try,” she added.
