JCPenney ‘gives back’

JCPenney is committed to giving back to the community.

Through Sunday, Sept. 28, JCPenney is inviting customers to help children in their local community by purchasing a $5 coupon good for 20 percent off most purchases made Sunday, Sept. 28, in JCPenney stores and jcp.com as well as on catalog purchases to support the JCPenney Afterschool Fund.

JCPenney Afterschool Fund will donate all the proceeds from the sale of the Day of Giving Back coupons to the Westside YMCA, providing Knoxville children in need with access to life-enriching after-school programs that keep them safe and foster their academic, physical and social development.

Coupons will be available through Sept. 28 at JCPenney West Town Mall.

“We realize that the after-school issue is a cause close to the hearts and minds of our customers and associates,” said JCPenney store manager James Suarez.

“The JCPEnney Day of Giving Back initiative provides us with an opportunity to increase local awareness about the importance of high-quality after- school programs in our community and engage our customers to support the after-school cause,” he added.

Studies show 14.3 million children in t he United States are unsupervised after school between the hours of 3 ad 6 p.m. each day. Additionally, studies show youth are as greater risk of involvement in crime, drug abuse and other destructive behaviors during these hours,

High-quality after-school programs provide a safe alternative for children and produce lasting life-changing benefits including healthier lifestyles, improved social skills and enhanced academic performance. To address this issue JCPenney created the JCPenney Afterschool Fund in 2001.

Together JCPenney and the JCPenney Afterschool Fund have contributed more than $70 million to support after-school programs nationwide.

In celebration of Day of Giving Back, representatives from Westside YMCA will be in the store from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 28, to raise awareness of their program and answer customer questions.

“Thanks to funds raised through our partnership with the JCPenney Afterschool Fund we’re able to directly improve the lives of children in our local community with essential after-school opportunities that will help them reach their full potential,” Suarez said.

JCPenney Afterschool Fund is a charitable organization committed to advancing the after-school movement in JCPenney communities by increasing access for children in need, inspiring innovaton in the field and elevating awareness of the value of afterschol programs.

By partnering with YMCA of the USA, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, National 4-H and United Way of America the JCPenney Afterschol Fund helps prepare children to reach their full potential by providing them with essential after-school opportunities.
