KSO to perform Tchaikovsky Oct. 16-17
Stephanie Burdette, Special to farragutpress - Thu, Oct, 2, 2008
The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Lucas Richman will present the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky at 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Oct. 16-17, at the Tennessee Theatre. The concerts feature cellist Reynard Rott.
The program will open with “Hamlet” Fantasy Overture, which completed the set of Tchaikovsky’s symphonic tone poems based on [William] Shakespeare.
Rott will then join Richman and the orchestra on stage to perform Rococo Variations, one of the most charming and graceful works for cello. Rott is a multifaceted instrumentalist who began studying at the San Francisco Conservatory at age 8. By age 10 he gave his first solo performance with an orchestra performing Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major. He currently holds the position of co-principal cellist at the State Orchestra of Lower Saxony in Hanover, Germany. Following the Rococo Variations, the orchestra will perform Symphony No. 5, a heroic work that catapulted Tchaikovsky into a whole new realm of composition.
“As a composer, Tchaikovsky had a unique voice that always managed to create vivid and compelling stories through his music. The KSO and I are delighted to be able to highlight such a distinguished composer on our Masterworks Series,” Richman said.
Tickets to the concert begin at $21.50 and may be purchased by logging on to the KSO Web site, www.knoxvillesymphony.com, or by calling the KSO Box Office at 865-291-3310 or Tickets Unlimit-ed, 865-656-4444.
