Playoff hopes boosted as Spartans capture defensive win at ‘Ryan’

The Webb School of Knoxville Spartans added another notch to its belt Friday, Oct. 3, with a 6-0 win over region foe Father Ryan High School Fighting Irish at FRHS’s Greer Field in Nashville.

Last season the Irish beat the Spartans on their home turf and the Spartans went into the game with a plan to return the favor.

Spartan head coach Dave Meske said, “They are a very good football team. They are big up front and they have good running backs. They are a team that beat us last year so it was nice to get a win.”

Webb’s defense can be credited for not allowing the Irish on the board.

“Our defense played unbelievable and special teams played great,” Meske said.

“I think our secondary played great and made a lot of tackles on the line of scrimmage, he added.

As far as action on the field, fans of neither team saw much in the way of offense.

An interception by junior defensive back Justin Alexander in the last minute of the game gave freshman running back Caleb Blance, who ended the game with 24 carries for 147 yards, the opportunity to put Webb’s six points on the board.

“Our offense moved the ball but we did not score when we had the opportunity to score,” Meske said.

Sophomore quarterback Parker Wormsley was 2-of-4 passing for 21 yards and senior defensive back Josh Mosley added another interception to his list, giving him three for the season.

Although the Spartans are now 3-3, they still have hopes for the playoffs.

“Right now we just have to take every region game one at a time and win every one. We are fighting to get in the playoffs; we are fighting with four other teams to get one of those last two spots in the playoffs,” Meske said.

Last week after a 31-14 win over Christian Academy of Knoxville, junior Clark Johnson said the team had its eye on the playoff prize.

The Spartans have three remaining region games. The will meet Chattanooga’s McCallie School Friday, Oct. 17, at Faust Filed, Battle Ground Academy Friday, Oct. 24, at Faust Field and will travel to Chattanooga for a match up with Baylor School Friday, Oct. 31.

The Spartans will be on the road again next week, Friday, Oct. 9, against Sweetwater High School. Opening kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
