It’s total destruction as Spartans blank Sweetwater 49-0

The Webb School of Knoxville Spartans corralled Sweetwater High School’s Wildcats Friday, Oct. 10, during a 49-0 victory on the Wildcats’ home turf.

The Wildcats were simply out- matched.

“Our fourth team scored on their first team,” Spartan statistician Arthur Long said.

“We tried not to run up the score, but we ended up doing that anyway,” he added.

Fourth-string running back Chad Nabors garnered his first TD of the season in the fourth quarter to zip up the game.

Spartan head coach Dave Meske said, “We got ahead quick … Threw a deep pass the first play of the game and then on the next play we ran it in for a touchdown.”

Sophomore running back Taino Perez led in rushing with 70 yards and grabbed the first TD of the night.

Running backs Sean Panella and Michael Carillon followed with two touchdowns for Panella and one for Carillon, all in the first half.

Quarterback Parker Wormsley was 3-of-4 for 75 yards passing.

Wormsley’s normal go-to guy, freshman standout running back Caleb Blance, whose normal per game rushing average is more than 100 yards, got a breather with four carries for 31 yards.

Meske said he was proud of his team.

“They played well and they played hard. They came out in the first half and really played, we were ahead 35-0 in the first half,” he added.

Meske and Long couldn’t say enough about senior punter Samy Abidi

“He had a 50-yard punt in the air. It was just ridiculous. It landed right on the one-yard line and just stopped,” Long said.

“He could really be a really big college prospect,” Meske added.

Spartan defense was at the top of its game as well.

Junior defensive back Clark Johnson picked off another pass, giving him his fourth for the season, while Carillon grabbed one as well.

The Spartan team will have little time to savor its victory.

Next week’s game is huge.

Chattanooga’s McCallie Tor-nadoes will travel to West Knoxville Friday, Oct. 17, to kick off three region games in a row for the Spartans as they battle for a spot in the Division II-AA playoffs.

“This game will affect playoffs,” Meske said. Both teams are 4-3.

Last week’s win against Father Ryan gave the Spartan team its first region victory.

Meske said t he team will be taking each upcoming region game one at a time and fighting for a playoff spot.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Webb’s Faust Field.
