Newby 3rd, FHS girls 4th at state
KCHS Lady Irish 2nd; Webb girls take 4th behind Zimmerman

Led by junior Alex Newby’s third-place finish, Farragut used a number of personal best performances to finish fourth at the TSSAA Class AAA State Cross-Country meet in Nashville Saturday, Nov. 1.

“I can’t say enough good things about Alex,” FHS head coach Chelsea Jacobs said of her No. 3 effort (19:11.25) in a field of 183. “She’s determined and had her mind set on the state meet all season. ... ran her heart out, ran with everything she had.”

Meanwhile, Knoxville Catholic’s girls came painfully close to a Class A/AA state crown, finishing just seven points behind state champ University School of Johnson City (102-109).

In Division II-AA, Webb’s Amber Zimmerman raced to second-place (19:11.97), leading the Lady Spartans to fourth-place. Other top team efforts found Bearden’s boys taking sixth in AAA, the KCHS Irish boys ninth in A/AA and Webb’s boys 10th in Division II-AA

“This was by far their best race of the season,” Jacobs said. “I’m really proud of all of them. All but two of them ran their personal best times. I’m especially proud of Margo Sneed (30th, 20:34.20), this is her senior year. This was her last state meet, and she ran her best time yet. Really came there ready to run and ready to lead the team.”

Peri Winborne rounded out the Lady Admirals’ top 50 finishes, grabbing 44th (21:02.93).

“We scored better than we were hoping to. We are extremely pleased with a fourth-place finish.”

Joanna Thompson’s 13th-place finish led the Lady Irish (21:03.85), followed by Ashley West in 17th (21:23.56), Stephanie Windle 28th (21:48.83) and Elyse Eilerman 29th (21:49.70).

Sam Shaughnessy was top Dog for BHS, finishing 12th (16:25.06), followed by Bearden’s Tyler Freeman 17th (16:51.19), Billy Miller 35th (17:13.86) and Peter Migun 47th (17:25.25).

Behind Zimmerman for Webb’s girls were Elle Brewer 15th (20:42.36), Natalie Ritchie 25th (21:13.17), Lauren Sampson 40th (22:05.54), and Andrea Dooley 51st (22:27.67). Gideon Wilson’s 27th-place finish led the KCHS boys (17:50.65). The Spartan boys were paced by Lucas Jones taking seventh (17:00.24) and Jake Fuqua 46th (18:37.61).
