• East TN Chapter of Tennessee Trails Association upcoming hikes: Nov. 8, hike to House Mountain. From the parking lot, we will climb to the west overlook for a view of Knoxville. Then we will hike along the ridge top to the east end of the mountain to the east overlook. From there, backtrack to the Turkey Trot trail. Meet at Asheville Highway Food Lion and plan to leave at 9 a.m. Hike is close to five miles and rated moderate.

• Behind five double winners, Bearden’s AquaDogs beat westside rival Webb School 209-149 during a dual meet Sunday, Oct. 25, in UT’s Allen Jones Aquatic Center. Bearden double winners were Ally Hardesty, Cliff Robins, Hannah Pinion, Kennedy Higdon and John Paul Gaylor.

• Christian Academy of Knoxville’s girls soccer team took a 20-2-1 record into the TSSAA Class A/AA state tournament this week in Chattanooga. The Lady Warriors blanked Seymour 7-0 in the region finals then crushed University School of Johnson City 9-0 in Sectional play Saturday, Nov. 1.

• Mercy Health Partners is sponsoring the City of Knoxville’s 2008 CrossKnox 15k Road Race starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, and beginning at the Alex Haley Statue in Morningside Park. The 9.3-mile CrossKnox race is run completely on greenways, ending at Bearden Elementary School in West Knoxville. An addition to the run this year’s event will include a 5K walk to World’s Fair Park through the new Second Creek Greenway. Early registration fee is $20; after Nov. 10, $25. Registration fees include long-sleeved, dri-fit shirts. To register online, visit

• YWCA Knoxville will host its Annual Race Against Racism 5K Run /1 Mile Walk Saturday, Jan. 17, at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center in East Knoxville. Sign-in and registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the race will kickoff at 1 p.m. Route runs along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and other historical markers. The day includes exhibitors, entertainment, speakers, food. Honorary Chair is Daedra Charles-Furlow, UT Lady Vols basketball assistant coach. To register, log onto or pick up registration forms at the YWCA. Registration is $15 per person on a team of five or more, $12 per child under 15 years of age, $20 per individual before Jan. 9, and $25 thereafter. • Thompson Cancer Survival Center’s 15th annual BUDDY’S Race Against Cancer, Sunday, Nov. 16, at World’s Fair Park features a 5K Walk ‘n Run and one-mile “Walk in the Park.” Race day registration begins at 1 p.m. A tribute to cancer survivors will begin at 2:15. The 5K Walk ‘n Run and one-mile walk will start at 3 p.m. Awards will be given. Proceeds benefit Thompson’s Cancer Outreach Services program. Entry fees are $30 for adults (age 19 and over), $15 for youth (age 18 and under). Individual participants may register until Friday, Oct. 31. Non-competitive walk around downtown begins with festivities at 9 a.m. and Start! Heart Walk at 10:30. Participants may choose either the three-mile or one-mile course.
