CAK girls soccer state champs again
Thompson siblings combine for goal in Lady Warriors’ 1-0 win versus FRA, take 2nd Class A/AA girls soccer state crown in three years

Make it two girls state soccer championships in three season for Christian Academy of Knoxville.

Head coach Nathan Pifer’s Lady Warriors (23-2-1) slipped past Franklin Road Academy 1-0 in the Class A/AA title game at Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga Saturday afternoon, Nov. 8.

The game’s lone score was Mary Thompson’s goal from about 10 yards out, assisted by her sister, Julie Thompson, at the 23:57 mark of the first half.

Goalkeeper Alesa Hammaker and the CAK defense held FRA (20-4-2) without a shot-on-goal in the first half, ending the game with a 17-5 edge.

The two schools have now combined to win the last six Class A/AA titles: CAK also winning in 2006.

Christian Academy rolled in both quarterfinal and semifinal state play, stomping Chris Presbyterian Academy 6-0 in the semis Thursday, Nov. 6, behind two goals from Brittany Hoffman.

Ruthie Edmunds, Paige Hoffman, Julie Thompson and Kayce Campbell also scored, as CAK led 17-3 in shots-on-goal. Assist came from Julie Thompson and Chelsea Cates.

CPA finished 15-6-4.

The Lady Warriors opened state tournament play with a 4-1 victory against Station Camp Wednesday, Nov. 5, led by two Campbell goals in the first.

Station Camp (18-3-3) jumped ahead within the first three minutes of the game before Campbell responded to give CAK a 2-1 halftime lead.

Second-half goals from Edmunds and Kiah Allen sealed victory.

Assists came from Allen, Melynne Denton and Brittany Hoffman.
