Galloway says Lady Hawks ‘unselfish’ with shooting potential

It should be an eager, unselfish varsity girls basketball team entertaining fans at Hardin Valley Academy during the program’s inaugural season.

“We have some girls that can shoot the ball, and our girls just really enjoy playing,” said head coach Jennifer Galloway, former assistant coach at Cleveland High accepting her first varsity head coaching challenge. “Our girls are willing to share the basketball.”

With a new team lacking seniors [HVA has no senior class for 08-09], Galloway said “maturity” and being “young” must be overcome.

The Lady Hawks’ style of play? “Ideally, eventually, we’d love to be a full-court team playing baseline to baseline,” said Galloway, whose husband, Keith, is HVA boys varsity head coach. “But right now we’re probably going to be half-court. … We’ve had some success in the half court in our scrimmages and in the summer.”

Galloway chose not to mention players individually and did not announce a starting lineup or top players in the mix for playing time.

Goals this season? “One thing that’s going for us, although this could be positive or negative, is that we’re brand new,” Galloway said. “Right now our focus is more on the intangibles such as winning the little battles, getting every loose ball, outrebounding our opponent, beating the other team up and down the floor.

“I think the girls have done really well on just thinking of the positives,” Galloway added. “We don’t have a tradition, but we’re the ones that get to set it. It’ll be neat when we can look back just being the first team at Hardin Valley.”

Team members are junior guards Haley Keith, Kaitlin James, Michelle Owens and junior post Mira Neely; sophomore guards Lauren Trent, Laura Hensley, Emily Cornelius, Tiffany Cantrell and sophomore post Jennifer Schilling, and freshmen posts Whitney Moore and Haley Blank.
