TVA union view

Voters spoke loud and clear about the need for change when they chose [U.S.] Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) as the 44th president of the United States. And while we are confident that our country has elected the right man to lead us forward, Americans must not forget that change must begin with us.

To rebuild the economy, we must start from its foundation and bring jobs to American workers to restore strength and confidence in our system. We finally have a leader in place who has pledged to bring our great nation out of this slump – a leader that understands the need for organized labor. President-elect Barack Obama realizes that the backbone of the American economy rests in the talents and skills of the American people.

For the past 60 years, The Tennessee Valley Authority and the Trades and Labor Council for Annual Employees have maintained the best training for crafts right here in our region with their joint training programs. This partnership continues to provide the job training programs necessary to get the workforce, and America, back on its feet. With our country still in economic turmoil, comprehensive job training programs are going to be increasingly important in the short term. The job training programs like ours are a key link in restoring this economy’s strength.

It has been said that when America catches a cold, the rest of the world catches pneumonia, and we have seen that firsthand over the past few months. It is time to take action. We’ve brought our nation out of a slump before and we can do it again. It is time to bring pride and success back to our homes. To do this, we must identify and implement more opportunities like this joint training program across the country.

The labor unions and TVA have joined forces to do their part to restore order to our country, our economy, and our lives as was envisioned by Franklin D. Roosevelt through his “New Deal.”

Through a combination of this effort and a more labor-friendly administration, we can truly see change here on our “main streets.”
