BHS hoop teams roll, enter week perfect

It looked like the Bearden Lady Bulldogs pulled off a commanding performance after a 49-34 win against Powell Monday, Nov. 24, at BHS.

But then came the Bearden boys a few minutes later against the overmatched PHS Panthers: final score, 103-39.

Bottom line for both teams were perfect records entering the week, as Mark Blevins’ BHS boys improved to 5-0 and Nathan Hodges’ Lady Bulldogs 3-0.

BHS GIRLS 49 POWELL 34

Holding the Lady Panthers to 35 percent shooting for the game and only one three-pointer made in the second half, “I thought our defensive effort was outstanding,” Hodges said.

Rikki Sanders, senior wing who joined senior post Mary Hirst with a co-team high 15 points, “Really got on track. Seemed like every time she was able to penetrate, good things happened,” Hodges said. “It wasn’t just her scoring. She was able to free up some other players and just really get everybody involved, and scoring herself around the basket.”

Bearden built upon its 24-19 halftime lead.

Shayla McDaniel scored seven for the Lady Bulldogs, followed by Taylor Cravanas’ four and two each for Joy McCuen, Jai-Jai. McLaughlin, Ellen Smith and Michelle Heath.

BHS BOYS 103 POWELL 39

Every Bulldog on the roster scored, led by Blake Jenkins and Nathan Powell with 16 points each, and Demonte Simpson and J.P. Burris with 10 apiece.

Gabe Campbell and Galen Campbell each scored nine, while Jaeland Lawson had eight, Dustin Craig five and Rico White four points.

Dion Fair, Ty Greene and DeShawn Oravetz each added three points. Nick Kelly scored two.

Blevins said Fair’s seven steals “was big.”
