Murder, mayhem en route to Farragut High Thursday

Murder and mayhem will come to Farragut High School Thursday, Dec. 4, through Sunday, Dec. 7, when FHS drama presents Broadway Babylon by Peter DePietro in Wells Auditorium.

The production, which centers around a murder that takes place during a birthday party for Broadway star Dan Dapper, will be a red carpet event.

FHS drama teacher Lea McMahan said, “We have never done this before. It is an interactive-with-the-audience murder mystery. We are serving hors d’oeuvres and apple cider and grape juice and birthday cake during intermission.

“We are having a limo and having people appear on the red carpet. We have a couple of local celebrities who have volunteered their time to come and help us out.”

Local “celebrities” will include Farragut Mayor W. Edward “Eddy” Ford III and his wife, Linda, Bill Landry from “The Heartland Series,” Frank Murphy from Star 102.1 and possibly a few more surprise guests.

McMahan said she chose “Broadway Babylon” rather than going with a holiday production because she felt it would be an interesting way to get the community involved with FHS theater.

“It seemed like a good idea because it is something very different and creative. The audience is involved in trying to figure out who did it so my actors are sitting with the audience and having conversations with them, and we may even have some of the audience members as suspects,” she added.

McMahan said the students have really enjoyed preparing for the production, but they have had one small glitch — no audience.

“They seem to be having a good time with it. The thing is when we have rehearsals, it is a lot of fun but we do not have an audience to play off of yet, so we are really looking forward to having an audience.”

McMahan and the students wanted to ensure everyone gets a surprise ending, so they made a few changes to the original script.

“We have added three resolutions to it. It came with one and we added two more so that every audience will have a different version of the ending.

“We went back and figured out two other suspects and gave them motive and opportunity. Sunday we are playing with the idea of doing all three versions,” she said.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 4-6, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7. Paparazzi should arrive early for the red carpet experience.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $6 for students. For more information, call 865-671-7167.
