KCHD begins Phase II of FluMist vaccine

Knox County Health Department began Phase II of the in-school FluMist influenza vaccine program Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of pediatrics recommend a second flu vaccine for vaccine nave children, which are those under the age of 9 years who are being vaccinated with flu vaccine for the first time this year or who were vaccinated with influenza vaccine for the first time last year but only received one dose of vaccine last year.

KCHD officials estimate approximately 1,800 students are vaccine nave and will need a second FluMist dose.

Phase II clinics will be held at daycares, Head Start programs and elementary schools through Dec. 12. A complete school schedule is available at www.knoxcounty.org/health/flumist_vaccination/pdfs/clinic_schedules.pdf/

Additional consent forms from parents are not needed for students who received their flu vaccination this year at school and need a second dose of vaccine. Any student who did not get vaccinated at school during Phase I, and has not properly completed a consent form, will need to turn in a completed and signed parental consent form to their school prior to the date of the scheduled school clinic. Consent forms are available at your school or online at www.knoxcounty.org/health/flumist_vaccination/pdfs/consent_packet.pdf/

Students who miss opportunities at school clinics may visit any KCHD location for a free influenza vaccination either FluMist or flu shot.

The following is a clinic schedule for area schools: beginning at 9 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, Christian Academy of Knoxville and Cedar Bluff primary School; beginning at 9 a.m., Friday, Dec. 5, Bearden Elementary, Blue Grass Elementary, A. L.
