Butturini, teammates among MMA winners

Competitors from two Westside martial arts schools, including a Farragut High School graduate, stood out above the rest at West Knoxville’s first fully sanctioned Mixed Martial Arts matches last month.

Held at the Cotton Eye Joe Thursday, Nov. 20, the MMA showdowns feature eight matches with some of the areas best Amateur MMA fighters.

Butturini Martial Arts won all four of its matches led by Robert Butturini 29-second first round knockout of Sam Freeman of Morristown.

Butturini, an FHS graduate (pictured right), is scheduled to fight for the Absolute Cagefighter title Feb. 7 at the Civic Coliseum.

Jeremy Thurman won his match with a submission at one minute of the first round. Eric Fritts beat Ernie Snyder of Sweetwater with a third-round TKO.

Rock Gurney won his first MMA fight with a victory versus Brian Guildy of Kingston by rear choke in approximately 45 seconds of the first round.

Wolf-Clan Combat Sports of Karns won both of its matches, with Craig Johnson defeating Coby Helton and Eric Davis defeating Jeremy Harrison.

Other fights saw Minor Baldwin of Gracie Barra Knoxville defeat Philip Grayson, and Scott McDermott of HardKnox MMA beat Chester McClain of Sweetwater.

Event was sponsored by the Southern Combat League and sanctioned by International Sport Karate Association.
