Watson, Bolen lead FHS rout of Wildcats in LC Classic opener

Austin Bolen, a standout Farragut High School linebacker who now comes off the FHS basketball bench for key minutes as a 6-foot-2 senior forward, perhaps proved he’s in tip-top hoops shape Saturday afternoon.

Bolen scored a career-high 16 points to go with 6-foot-9 Sam Watson making child’s play out of Sweetwater’s anemic post game, scoring a game-high 21 points in limited minutes.

The end result was a 64-29 Admirals blowout of the Class AA Wildcats during opening round action at the Lenoir City Christmas Classic at LCHS Dec. 27.

“I feel I’m just starting to get back into the swing of things coming back from football,” said Bolen, whose Admirals improve to 10-2 overall while remaining 4-1 in District 4-AAA. “The conditioning’s a lot different. In football it’s like as hard as you can go for about 10 seconds, but basketball is just back-and-forth, up and down the court. It took me a little bit to get used to it.”

Farragut head coach Donald Dodgen said Bolen “had a great ballgame tonight, he’s a steady player. He’s getting his basketball legs.

“I thought they all played well at times.”

Sweetwater (4-7) was led by Corey Billingsley’s 11 points.

Dodgen said a couple of key players are sick, but added “good things are happening now” after Saturday’s win.

Farragut extended its 17-5 lead after one quarter to 39-11 at halftime as Bolen and Watson combined for 13 points in the second quarter (Watson seven). It was 52-23 after three quarters.

“We had a couple of tough games, we had a loss or two that hurt, so it just helped out to get a good win like this,” Watson said.

Nate Clark scored seven and Landon Hunley six for FHS, while Wayman McLaughlin added four. Reese Browning had three points while Ben Mixer scored two.

Farragut continued in LC Holiday Classic action Monday afternoon, Dec. 29, versus winless Hardin Valley Academy (after press deadline), then closed tourney play Tuesday, Dec. 30, against Walker Valley.

The Admirals and FHS girls will host Powell Friday, Jan. 2, with girls varsity action beginning around 6:30 p.m.

Farragut’s varsity teams then travel to Clinton versus the CHS Dragons and Lady Dragons of District 4-AAA Saturday, Jan. 3.
