S. Greene slips past FHS girls in ‘Greenbank’

Poor free throw shooting, careless ballhandling and seeing its two top scorers being held in check the final 24 minutes added up to an opening round holiday tourney hoops loss for the Farragut Lady Admirals.

South Greene handed Farragut just its second setback this season, 64-56, during opening round action at the 16-team Greenbank Ladies Classic in Greeneville, Saturday, Dec. 27.

South Greene used a 16-5 second quarter edge to build a 31-19 halftime lead. “They got really aggressive on defense, we had a ton of turnovers,” said FHS head coach Wes Edmonds, whose team fell to 10-2 overall while remaining 4-1 in District 4-AAA. “They really capitalized on it in the second quarter.”

However, a 10-0 Lady Ads run started the third quarter, led by a pair of three-point baskets from FHS sophomore wing Jessica Griswold, who scored eight in the third and 13 for the game.

“Jessica played really, really well,” Edmonds said. “She kinda had the game we’ve been waiting on her to have.”

It was 45-39 SGHS after three quarters.

But Farragut made only 10-of-21 free throws for the game, many of those misses late.

Also, despite a hot start from standout FHS guard Stephanie Torrence — 10 points in the first quarter — the senior scored only four points the final three quarters.

“They really started focusing on her and started locking her up,” Edmonds said of Torrence.

Brittany Doss, Lady Admirals senior point guard, scored all 11 of her points in the second half, including three 3-point baskets.

“Brittany played really, really well … she looked for her shot and made it,” Edmonds said. “I think it was her highest scoring game of the season.”

Hayley Newby, FHS sophomore post, was held to seven points.

Other Lady Admirals scorers were Jennifer Rutherford with five and two points each for Abbie Cooper, Katie Cargo and Anna Brinson.

Farragut played North Greene (9-3 entering that game) in the consolation bracket semifinals Monday, Dec. 29 (after press deadline).

The Lady Admirals then played either perennial Tennessee power Shelbyville or Buena (Calif.) in the final consolation round game Tuesday, Dec. 30, followed by a home game versus Powell (Jan. 2) and at Clinton (Jan. 3).
