Lady Dawgs win in Florida

Carrying its winning ways out of state, the Bearden Lady Bulldogs opened successfully among an eight-team basketball tournament field in Florida.

Bearden edged T. R. Miller, Brewton, Ala., 34-30 during opening-round action in the Playground Area Shootout in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. Saturday, Dec. 27.

“We played really well defensively, they were really super quick … Miller’s a team that went to the final four [post-season tournament] last year in Alabama,” said BHS head coach Nathan Hodges, whose Lady Bulldogs improved to 9-1 overall and remain unbeaten in District 4-AAA at 5-0.

“Every catch they were trying to attack the basket, it was a challenge to be able to help each other and keep them on the perimeter,” Hodges added. “We just forced them to take tough shots.

“They were extremely patient on offense, and we were as well, so it kinda made for a low scoring game. We controlled the game for the most part and kinda grinded it out.”

Never trailing after the first quarter, Bearden was led in scoring by senior post Mary Hirst and senior guard Rikki Sanders with 12 each. “They kinda carried us,” Hodges said.

Ellen Smith added six for BHS while Shayla McDaniel and Taylor Cravanas each scored two.

Bearden advanced to the tourney semifinals Monday, Dec. 29 (after press deadline) to play Pensacola (Fla.) High School, unbeaten at 10-0 and ranked No. 2 statewide in Florida’s Class 4-AAA (six classes total).

If the Lady Dawgs won Monday it advanced to the championship game Tuesday, Dec. 30, against the other semifinal winner: Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) versus Chobtawhatche (host team, Ft. Walton Beach).
