• Michael Williams, former Farragut High School All-state catcher who helped lead the Admirals baseball team to the 2008 Class AAA state title, will receive the Class AAA Player of the Year from the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association in late January, it was announced last week by FHS head coach Tommy Pharr.

• Knoxville Lacrosse will hold Spring 2009 lacrosse season registration for boys fourth through eighth grades from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, in Farragut Middle School cafeteria.

• Harvey Broome Group of the Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Club upcoming outings include: Jan. 24-25, Winter Backpack, Bob's Bald. Starting point is Beech Gap on the Cherahala Skyway, a drive of about hour 45 minutes from Knoxville. The hike is about three miles, with an 800-foot elevation gain. Bob's Bald is a large open, grassy area with a good spring nearby. Hike is rated moderate to difficult depending on weather. Views are excellent and the campsite is superb. While hike distance is relatively easy, weather can be extreme at this high elevation (5,400 feet). High winds, some ice and snow are possible, so good winter gear is critical. Please speak with hike leader if you have not previously backpacked in winter. Destination will be changed if problems arise with road access to Beech Gap. • Phil Garner, former Major League Baseball player and manager after standout careers at Bearden High School and as a Tennessee Volunteer second baseman, will have his number retired during the 2009 Tennessee Baseball Leadoff Banquet Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Knoxville Convention Center. Event will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Dinner and the program follow at 7 p.m. Garner is featured speaker. The All-Century Baseball Team also will be introduced and honored. Garner played second base for the Vols from 1968-70. He started his major league career with Oakland (1973-76), then played for Pittsburgh (1977-81) and was part of the 1979 Pirates team that won the World Series, contributing 10 hits in the Series. Leading Houston to the 2005 World Series has highlighted Garner’s managerial career.

• YWCA Knoxville will host its Annual Race Against Racism 5K Run /1 Mile Walk Saturday, Jan. 17, at YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center in East Knoxville. Sign-in and registration will begin at 11:30 a.m; race at 1 p.m. Route runs along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and other historical markers. Day includes exhibitors, entertainment and food.
