HVA girls fall versus Oak Ridge

In a game that began much earlier than usual on the day after it was originally scheduled due to weather, few fans filled the stands to see the Hardin Valley Academy girls lose to Oak Ridge at HVA.

As first reported on Farragut First Edition, www.farragutpress.com Feb. 4, HVA kept the score close very early in the game, but Oak Ridge, undefeated in District 3-AAA and 19-2 overall, overpowered the Hawks and won 68-34.

“The first few minutes we did well because we were able to stop them defensively, and when you can stop a team like Oak Ridge that means they can’t get into their full-court press,” head coach Jennifer Galloway said. “Once we missed a few rebounds and they were able to score, they got into their press quickly and caused us some trouble.”

By the end of the first quarter, ORHS began to pull away, 23-10.

The Lady Hawks scored only six more points in the half.

Junior Haley Keith, leading Hardin Valley with nine points, said, “I think Oak Ridge is really aggressive on defense. They are really quick.”

HVA post Jennifer Schilling, who had four points, added, “You can’t throw the ball over them.”

This was Keith’s first game back after an elbow injury. “It’s feeling better. It was good to play again.”

When HVA walked into the locker rooms at halftime, Oak Ridge had a big lead, 44-16.

Lady Hawks’ freshman post Haley Blank said, “I thought we did better than last time we played them,” Blank was HVA’s second leading scorer with six points. “I’ve previously had trouble making post moves inside. I tried extra hard tonight, and the shots eventually fell.”

The bright spot in the game for Hardin Valley, 3-15 overall and 3-11 in district after the game, was the fourth quarter. They held Oak Ridge to nine points.

The Lady Hawks’ regular season ends Friday, Feb. 13, against huge 3-AAA rival Karns at KHS.
