Road warrior Soccer Ads start ’09 with 2-0-1 slate
Alan Sloan - Thu, Mar, 19, 2009
Finding itself on the road three times to begin the 2009 boys soccer season, Farragut managed two wins and one tie.
The Admirals blanked South-Doyle 6-0 led by a Trevor Grieco hat trick (three goals) Monday, March 9, at SDHS.
Athens was the destination one day later, as Farragut edged the McMinn County Cherokees 2-1 behind goals from Grieco, a senior midfielder, and Carlos Ramos.
Traveling to Oak Ridge Thursday, March 12, Farragut tied the Wildcats 1-1 as Ryan Stinton’s header provided the lone Admirals goal. Marshall Ishmael assisted off a direct kick.
In addition to Grieco, FHS head coach Wallie Culbreth praised midfielders Stinton, Kellen Catani and Nicholas Muth for their three-game efforts. “All played really excellent,” Culbreth said.
At ORHS, “It was wet, cold and raining, and my boys were a bit tired from playing two games … and Oak Ridge has a gigantic field,” Culbreth said. “In retrospect I probably shouldn’t have scheduled three games in the first week.
“And Trevor Grieco was hurt [high ankle sprain],” Culbreth added. “He didn’t play very long.”
The Ads enjoy a Spring Break holiday before returning to action for the team’s first home game versus Lenoir City beginning at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 24.
Next is the annual Bearden Invitational March 26-30 at BHS’s Bruce Allender Field.
