Softball Hawks whip Karns for fourth win of inaugural season

Continuing to defy the odds of how a new program is supposed to perform less than one month into its inaugural season, Hardin Valley softball took down its No. 1 rival last week.

A 3-1 victory against District 3-AAA archrival Karns at KHS Tuesday, March 24, has the Lady Hawks soaring at 4-1 overall entering the week (all five games in district).

“It’s been pretty good ... pleasantly surprised by my girls,” HVA head coach Michael Fredieu said. “As a coach I’m definitely proud of my girls and happy with the way they’ve stepped up and continued to perform each and every day.

“I knew if they were able to focus in and play to their best that we could beat anybody and we can be contenders with the top teams in our district,” he added.

Against Karns, Fredieu said winning pitcher Laura Hensley “pretty much, throughout the game, she kept their big hitters contained. Michelle Owens stepped up big with a couple of clutch hits.”

HVA shortstop Liz Dobbins “got a couple of key hits in the Karns game, moved people around,” Fredieu said. Taylor Siegel scored one run for the Lady Hawks.

“As games go on we learn from our mistakes, and we keep getting better and better as we go along,” Fredieu said. “One person can’t do it. The unity between everybody, they just work as one, that’s how we’ve been able to get the wins.”
