FHS soccer wins 3 at ‘Palmetto’

All the 1-0 scores belonged favorably to Farragut during its annual appearance in the 16-team, five-state Palmetto Cup in Columbia, S.C. last week.

Three 1-0 victories allowed FHS to grab third-place before a 2-1 setback against Eastside (S.C.) Saturday, April 11, ended the Admirals’ attempt to win the Palmetto crown.

The Admirals began with a 1-0 win against Bob Jones (Ala.), No. 2-ranked in that state, Wednesday, April 8.

One day later FHS blanked Walhalla (S.C.) 1-0, No. 3 in its S.C. division, then did the same versus Brookland-Cayce (S.C.), No. 6 in its S.C. division, Friday, April 10.

Suffering its first loss against Eastside despite a goal from Brandon Klarner, Farragut’s record stood at 9-1-2 entering the week.

Junior defender Wayman McLaughlin sparked the Admirals scoring with two of FHS’s three game-winning goals.

“Wayman McLaughlin played very well,” FHS head coach Wallie Culbreth said, adding sweeper Nic Muth “played excellent.”

Eastside knocked Farragut out of Palmetto championship contention for the second straight season.

“Same team, same kid,” Culbreth said. “Last year we ended up tying and not advancing. This year we got down to the last two minutes, and that kid scored again.”

David Jordan, FHS left outside midfielder, has been lost for the season after a MCL tear during Cup play.
