HVA soccer near 3-AAA top; Baseball Hawks edge Karns
Gibbs also diamond victim
Alan Sloan - Thu, Apr, 23, 2009
An excellent pitching performance against its archrival followed by a dramatic come-from-behind effort one evening later netted two wins for Hardin Valley Academy baseball.
Edging Karns 2-1 to earn the program’s first-ever District 3-AAA win, the Hawks used a pitching performance from starter Ryan Russell “as good as we’ve had all year,” HVA head coach Kirk Renegar said. That home win, April 16, was one day before a dramatic 7-6 win versus Gibbs at HVA.
In beating Karns, Graham Rowan’s three hits led offensively, while Renegar pointed to key outfield defensive plays and a tough, critical catch from shortstop Jake Denton. “A big program win.”
Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth versus Gibbs, HVA scored six runs on RBI singles from Elliot Whitt, Rowan and Ty Zollman. Chase Kirk’s two-RBI singled tied it and Stephen Revilla’s squeeze-bunt put the Hawks ahead for good.
