Farragut Y boasts new location, name

Farragut’s YMCA will be closing in coming months and relocating to Jefferson Park, site of the new Davis Family YMCA.

The subdivision off North-shore Drive will be the location of YMCA’s newest facility, a 24,000-square foot building that will feature a wellness floor; aerobic, cycling, Pilates and massage studios, a six-lane pool and two lobby areas.

In addition, the Davis Family YMCA will feature a youth sports field and outside play structure.

“We are here to celebrate the past, present and future of this Y-M-C-A. … The future of this Y-M-C-A is fun to think about,” Jim Dickson, president and CEO of YMCA of East Tennessee, said.

“All of you should be proud. I’m proud. It’s an honor for me to be a part of this,” he added.

The site’s April 24 ground-breaking joined dignitaries and various officials, including The University of Tennessee women’s basketball head coach Pat Summitt, Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale and state senator Tim Burchett, along with County Commissioners, in wishing YMCA luck.

“To those of you who support the Y-M-C-A, thank you very much,” YMCA Board Chairman Bert Bertelkamp said.

“Without Scott [Davis] we wouldn’t be here right now,” he added, thanking Davis for the donation of land on which the up-and-coming Y will sit.

“Great things happen for reasons we’ll never see or understand,” Davis said during a tearful speech in which he accepted a plaque in his brother Jeff’s honor. The plaque will hang in the lobby of the Davis Family YMCA.

The lease on Farragut YMCA’s current building expired last fall; the business currently is operating on an extension basis.

Several Farragut locations were considered for the site, but ultimately Davis’s land donation swayed YMCA to moving to Northshore.
