Rivals reach sub-state
Bearden rallies, clips Powell in 8 innings

Watching Bearden senior Garrett Copeland take the mound in the fifth inning of the Region 2-AAA semifinal versus Powell at Helton-Ridley Field Monday, May 11, you would think the 3-0 score was in his favor.

His teammates fed off Coleman’s calm demeanor and responded with a barrage of hits in the sixth-inning to tie the game 3-3. After a scoreless seventh, the Bulldogs (29-12-1) exploded for four runs in the eighth to win 7-3 and end the PHS season at 24-10.

“Garrett has been there four years, he knows what he is doing,” BHS catcher Mark Lail said. “He is so even-keeled that you can’t tell if he is mad or rattled, he just goes out there and throws the pill.”

In the top of the eighth with two outs and runners at first and second, Lail took a 3-2 fastball and drilled an RBI single to center

Jonathan Elmore then hit a bomb into the left centerfield gap for a two-RBI triple. “It was a fastball up-and-in and that he just left there for me to hit and I took advantage,” Elmore said.

Ty Greene added a double to drive in Elmore and then Copeland took over, shutting down the Panthers in the bottom of the extra frame.
